I am a recent graduate of a prominent jazz program, and many of the faculty members I am friendly with have told me that they find it unfortunate that while they had the opportunity to play with many older/experienced cats, it's much more difficult for todays college/post college age musicians to do so.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1713397068832099475.post-33021842407838330902011-06-07T13:16:27.161-07:002011-06-07T13:16:27.161-07:00Dwayne Burno is an excellent musician and bassist....Dwayne Burno is an excellent musician and bassist. I find his commentary on today's musicians to have more than a kernel of truth. However, it's problematic that he takes a position as if he is somehow completely above it all. He's part of the younger generation of musicians, whether he likes it or not. His experience with older musicians is not SOOO vast as to warrant him having a bully pulpit to lecture everyone else.

Furthermore, there are things the younger set is bringing to the table that the older cats didn't. If he chooses not to recognize this because his understanding of jazz is so classicist in nature, that's his prerogative, but also his loss. At the very least, there are younger musicians making a sincere effort to make the music relevant to young people again. Playing the same standards and bop tunes more or less the same way as 40 years ago is not going to cut it if jazz will ever regain some kind of audience. I'm thankful for the elder musicians who've shown us so much. I'm also thankful that there are younger musicians who don't seek to simply play exactly as the elders did.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1713397068832099475.post-34158350999507139692011-06-04T03:41:25.705-07:002011-06-04T03:41:25.705-07:00OK, thanks for the responses, and I'm welcome ...OK, thanks for the responses, and I'm welcome to positives and negatives, as long as they are civil, respectful, and sans profanity. He seems to be guilty of the same thing he criticized the older cats of when he was a 20-something himself. He certainly has the power to be a part of a solution to the problem (if there is indeed a problem at all).Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08599431226244286890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1713397068832099475.post-36074321415652476692011-05-31T12:34:04.407-07:002011-05-31T12:34:04.407-07:00So, he's bummed that he didn't get to play...So, he's bummed that he didn't get to play with the elders when he moved to NYC but now he doesn't "want anything to do with today’s young musicians that claim to play jazz"?

Sweeping generalizations like the one's Burno makes here are unfair and counter productive. Sure, there are young musicians who think they are the be-all end-all...but there always have been! Many 20-something's of our generation were the very same way, and I'm sure that dates back to the dawn of time. Young people are arrogant and think they know more than they do.

But I play with lots of 20-somethings in Seattle and I can tell you they are some serious students of the music.

Rather than dumping on a whole generation, how about taking some young cats under your wing, like you wished the elders had done for you, and teach them what you have learned?Jason Parkerhttp://oneworkingmusician.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1713397068832099475.post-48592300947411041592011-05-30T23:29:30.534-07:002011-05-30T23:29:30.534-07:00My folks had that same Marantz receiver! My folks had that same Marantz receiver!Jason Parkerhttp://oneworkingmusician.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1713397068832099475.post-10868402087488979932011-05-30T21:22:59.180-07:002011-05-30T21:22:59.180-07:00As a bassist, I'm both challenged and inspired...As a bassist, I'm both challenged and inspired by Dwayne's thoughts. What he s...Wow!I've got to hear this guy play!

What he said about how to listen to bass players is elementary to the jazz pianist. with a great bass line, it makes our job so much easier--punching, swinging, filling.

I had the privilege of working with and studying the life of Roland Kirk's bassist Vernon Martin. I hear his lines live on in players like Brian Bromberg, Andy Simpkins, Bob Saravia. Pianists love alternate root lines in songs like "sophisticated lady". we love to hear Sharp eleventh notes in the bottom.

As far as the blues and rhythm changes--it's all about color these days. As I listen to GC play, the pallette is moving too fast to call a chord part of functional harmony. A pianist of that sensitivity needs a bassist that is constantly pushing.

thanks for the opportunity to get to know the personality of a swinging bass player!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
